The Triassic period was the beginning of the Mesozoic era, which lasted until the end of cretaceous period. The first dinosaurs appeared in the Triassic period. These dinosaurs were agile carnivores that evolved rapidly. Some became herbivores.Small mammals also appeared at this time, as did the flying reptiles , called pterosaurs .
Plant life :
The biggest trees were conifers. These formed huge forests, Squat cycads and ferns were ground plants fed on by smaller animals .
Life in the air :
the pterosaurus were cousins of the dinosaurs, and were the only reptiles ever to fly. They flew above the conifer forests catching insects.They may also have skimmed the water of rivers and seas for fish .

Other reptiles lived alongside the dinosaurs, such as the piglike dicynodonts.
